It all seems pointless, the story doesn't make and sense, parts of the story didn't make any difference to the outcome, it's as if it was rushed and just not thought through.

ACTION GALORE. | 30/12/2023
A sequel to the mesmerizing "Fist Of God" book. Nonstop action -- but, so much so, that essential character development lacking -- hence, inability to resonate and develop an affinity with any of the characters, especially protagonist British SAS Colonel Mike Martin.

This book was extremely informative as well as an interesting and exciting read. I gained a great deal of knowledge about Afghanistan in the post 9/11 era.

Frederick does not disappoint. Good book. Only negative I wish main caracter was more involved and more drama on his part. But that said I think the caracter is more accurate written than the drama I would have liked.

Far-fetched yarn full of information dumps | 02/07/2023
So when Westerne intelligence gets wind of an upcoming major terrorist action by Al-Quaeda, they decide to infiltrate Al-Quaeda with a British army officer..... as you do.
So Mike Martin becomes an Afghan, becomes involved in the terrorist plot, and (spoiler aleret) through skill, bravery and self-sacrifice manages to thwart the terrorists.
The characters are all cardboard, the whole exercise is improbable in the extreme, the writing could have been done by computer.

Frederick Forsyth is a fantastic author and I have really enjoyed many of his other books but this is terrible (sorry Mr Forsyth). The storyline is ridiculous, there are endless new characters which confuse the reader and the ending is too quick, bizarre and very disappointing. The book is written for someone with absolutely no knowledge of any basic spy/military terminology such that it was cringeworthy seeing the author continually roll out common phrases in inverted commas (‘Need to know’

Faction tinged with implausible chances | 05/01/2023
Good facts and history used to create fiction, but totally contrived and implausible. For example, the chances of an F15 crashing in the US, on a remote cabin where a dangerous terrorist is held by the CIA.
I laughed while reading it. I told my wife and she laughed.
In summary a sort of good story, ruined in part by contrived artefacts, unrealistic even for fiction

I bought the audible version, well narrated throughout.
It’s incredible to think that Forsyth has been at the top of the thriller genre for some four decades. Every story is fast paced and bang up to the minute and The Afghan kept me absolutely riveted from start to finish.

FF is a pretty good storyteller but The Afghan failed to capture my interest. I slogged through it and couldn't wait to reach the predictable ending. Choppy prose, cartoonish characters and dense minutiae that got in the way. I'd pass on this one.

Being a fan of Forsyth's previous books such as The Day of the Jackal, Avenger, The Fourth Protocol and my favourite, The Odessa File, I was looking forward to this book. Frederick Forsyth has written a handful of the very best thrillers of my lifetime, "Day of the Jackal" foremost among them. He’s also written fun-to-read boys’-own stories such as "The Dogs of War" and "The Fist of God." "The Afghan" is neither, and despite the still-topical plot of an al Qaeda plot and the need for a deep penetration agent to uncover it couldn’t induce me to keep turning the pages even to the halfway point.

Exquisitely woven, but told clearly, this is a masterwork. Not just for the spy and thriller storytelling, but for its sharp insight into the construction of an operation. Both the good guys and the bad guys. One leaves the AGHAN with a sense of satisfied completion, unlike the unease that accompanies any of a number of LeCarrè tales of dashed idealism. I can not recommend THE AFGHAN more highly.
