A very good story that will keep you in suspense as a British soldier gets entangled with rebellious elements in Belfast.Non-stop action with many realistic scenes that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.I watched it with subtitles as the Irish and the English accents were hard to decipher.A little but hard to follow. As who is fighting who is difficult to distinguish at times, the reason I dropped a star on the rating.Overall though a very entertaining film.

A soldier with the first contingent of British Army into Belfast in that year becomes detached from his unit during a Falls Road operation, and spends the night escaping danger. He is chased, shot at, and bombed. He encounters both sides, Fenian and Orange, and sees the murderous hatred of each for the other. Filmed in dark, yellow display, with extreme closeups and bouncing camera. Ominous music. This is supposed to pass for art. In actuality, it is just annoying.

71 sees a British soldier stranded in Ireland attempting to survive and return home. The premise seems dull but stellar performances, gripping action and outstanding direction keep this well above. Less of a film about war and more a film about a single man, the ending is as gritty and accurate as the rest and well worth the watch. It is absolutely clear from this and Starred Up as to why Jack O'Connel has been so successful since Skins.

Political and insulting. And not how you think.Beautifully filmed, I thought I was watching a documentary, until the Bourne supreme kicked in. One minute he is dodging bullets, then he is part of a massive government coverup. Total garbage, so disappointed.What's really sad is the need to fictionalise this period in history. It's quite frankly disgusting. I know people who died and are paralysed for life. But hey, let's forget real stories, let's just trivialise the whole thing

Flaccid and muddy without any insight into the characters or their actions. Big on atmosphere, but the story is too thin to hold up. Solid performance by the child actor, but the women's roles are little more than window dressing. The overall effect was artificial, a historical drama written by someone who didn't know the history and had no idea how to tell a story.

Brilliant acting, great story, had never even heard of this film before. Even though its not a true story it certainly feels like aspects of it could be, it feels authentic and it has prompted me to look up the history because to me The Troubles were just something that was on the news every night when I was a kid. I served my country in the Army and can only say that lieutenant was completely at fault when he said no riot gear allowed that day. The sergeant was correct of course in having the men dressed for a riot situation and would have prevented the situation on scene from escalating. Upon a retreat there was no accountability regardless of the crisis as is required in standard operating procedure! The higher ranking officers were in deep with the civilians and assisted in some of the criminal
