I've had this recording of Turandot since the 1980's, and for me it's the only Turandot. This review was prompted by reading comments about the "miscasting" of smaller voices in big dramatic roles. I first noticed this when reading about Freni singing lead Verdi roles in Don Carlo and Aida. The same issue can be found with Regine Crespin's Brunnhilde. Karajan had a reputation for casting singers with beautiful but less than Titanic voices in roles that are suitable

| | 4.0 out of 5 stars Did Karajan have his eyes closed during this recording session? | 20.09.2021
I ask this question because BOTH a.) the often transcendental beauty of this performance and b.) the numerous nearly-chaotic incidents it contains, probably resulted from the maestro's famous, cosmically-attuned closed eyes (note: the booklet photo shows that the Chorus was positioned BEHIND the podium, which I'm sure contributed to their too-frequent lack of coordination with the orchestra). It also seems that Karajan had little interest in the ACT 2 Scene 1 Trio of the Masks, which

| | 5.0 out of 5 stars A digression on Domingo... | 10.12.2016
I absolutely love this recording for Karajan's conducting but also for the touch of schadenfreude entailed in enjoying one of the most blatant pieces of bad editing I've ever heard. Have fun listening to the terrible splice in, of an obviously pre-recorded top C by Domingo in Act 2 at 'No, no principessa altera, ti voglia tutto ardente d'amore'. However I've always felt there was a definite thrill in listening to 70's-era Domingo go for, and nail, pieces with really
| | 4.0 out of 5 stars A straining but very human Turandot | 06.02.2016
I know that a lot of people say that Ricciarelli harmed her for voice singing parts that were to heavy for her instrument which is true but remember that Turandot was a studio only assumption and i doubt that it did much harm. 1981 ( year of the recording) was the year when one could start to hear the damage that her role choices did to her voice and the high notes sound strained which one coul hear also in her Aida recording recorded in the same year. She sounded good on record just in 1979/80

| | 4.0 out of 5 stars Unnatural recording, but beautiful singing | 05.10.2015
The problem with this recording is that the tempo is unreasonably and absurdly slowed down relative to most performances of this opera. This forces the singers all to sing the arias a bit unnaturally. For example, when Domingo sings the famous "non piangere Liu" he literally had to wait on the slow tempo to sing the climatical "che non cade, chiede colui, che non sorride più" which, as a result, made it anti-climatical due to the unnecessarily added effort to control the
| | 3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful orchestra, otherwise mannered | 29.09.2015
Karajans Turandot is certainly a strange affair. On one hand, the orchestra is entrancingly beautiful. On the other hand some of the singing is a rather painful to hear. The first virtue, and at the same time the first flaw, of this recording is to be found in the conducting. While Karajan puts all effort into turning the score into a magical, mystical and especially fairytale-like experience, he also bends and breaks the intentions of Puccini to the degree that you cannot always recognize the
| | 5,0 von 5 Sternen Luxus pur! | 06.08.2015
| | 4,0 su 5 stelle Molte, moltissime luci e qualche ombra | 25.05.2015

| | 3.0 out of 5 stars A VERY slow Turandot | 03.03.2015
Karajan's Turandot is a fine recording, the sound is excellent, with lots of atmosphere. My biggest complaint would be the conducting of Maestro Karajan himself. EVERYTHING IS TOO SLOW, I give him credit for bringing out the beauty in La Boheme and others, but the first act of Turandot, which is probably the most intense, and bloodthirsty. Here, it sounds like a train slowly making its way down hill for fear of derailing. I would've really loved it if he picked up the pace A LOT MORE/ As
| | Superb but an over partedPrincess | 09.02.2015
This is a superbly conducted performance with stunning playing for the VPO. Karajan explores depths and details in this music unknown to other conductors. There is a major problem, however, in that the lead soprano is simply over parted by the role of Turandot. For the rest it is fabulous. If only we could have had Nilsson in the title role!

| | 2.0 out of 5 stars Karajan's Slow Boat To China... | 20.04.2014
It's as if Karajan had downed a bottle of scotch and a couple of vallium with one hand and grimly held up his baton in the other. His conducting of Turandot is so meanderingly slow that you fear the whole thing will grind to a complete halt at any moment. Casting wise, Hendrick's makes a fine Lui, the part of Calaf probably sits a little too high for Domingo, and Ricciarelli sounds as if she turned up to sing Lui but got a nasty shock when told she'll be screaming away as Turandot.
| | 2.0 out of 5 stars One big flaw. | 15.04.2014
Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic are wonderful. Domingo is wonderful. Hendricks is wonderful. But there is one big flaw that ruins this recording of Turandot. Katia Ricciarelli is totally miscast as Turandot. She has a beautiful lyric voice, but it is not large enough to portray the enigmatic princess. I would recommend the cds of Nilsson/Bjorling, Nilsson/Corelli, Marton/Carreras, or Sutherland/Pavarotti. I would also recommend the dvd of Marton/Domingo.
| | 5.0 out of 5 stars a great recording, this isn't a stage performance | 19.09.2013
So Katia Ricciarelli doesn't have a meat-cleaver voice that cuts through orchestral tutti in an opera house! That's why she's right for this role. Look at the story: do Turandot's subjects feel great about her executions of unsuccessful suitors? No--she's in peril, and a valkyrie voice doesn't convey that. Ricciarelli's voice is very expressive and suits the role perfectly. Why do reviewers follow the "conventional wisdom" that this wouldn't play in
| | Souvenir | 17.08.2013

All my many previous purchases from Zoverstocks have proved to be excellent buys. However, this opera arrived without its booklet which (as I have now explained in two emails to Zoverstocks) makes it practically useless. With recording companies such as DGG you often get a full libretto with an opera these days, and what you invariably get is a track list. Without that track list it is not possible to play a part of the opera, then stop, and go back at a later point resuming where you last left
| | Why don't more people like this recording??? | 30.04.2013
I think this is a most amazing recording. All the hype that Katia Ricciarelli didn't have the chops for this role is just crap. Have you listened to how beautiful and how soaring her voice is??? I don't think the role of Turandot was too big for her at all. Placido Domingo is always in stunning voice, that's a given, I don't think he's ever recorded anything bad ever. In fact he's my favorite tenor ever and there won't ever be another like him. The Liu of Barbara
| | Captivating - On balance, this is the best version of Turandot | 06.04.2013
Much has been written here by other reviewers about the misacasting of Katia Ricciarelli as Turandot. Despite her vocal shortcomings she is dramatically better Turandot than Sutherland. Sure enough, Ricciarelli struggles with the high c-s a couple of times (quite obviously) but she is always dramatically involved. One quickly forgets those moments of her vocal inadequacy because of the dense atmosphere and exotic orchestral magic Karajan and the VPO conjure up in this recording. In fact I think
| | Shimmers, enthrals | 04.04.2013
I just heard the first scene of this recording on Radio 3 and it reminded me how spectacular it is. The recording of the chorus - magnificent. Domingo as Calaf falling in love with Turandot ("O meraviglia") - spellbinding. The orchestra! Oh! What a sound! The hairs stood up on the back of my neck from start to finish. This is the recording to have.
| | 27.02.2013
Some of the reissues of older recordings that are now available allow us to hear earlier conductors and soloists when they were at their peak. This version of Karajan with the Vienna Philharmonic is a good reminder of this. Placido Domingo makes a very heroic Calaf. It is good to hear him in his prime. The choice of Katia Ricciarelli has been criticised on the grounds that she doesn't have a powerful dominating sound, as shown by other, more famous, Turandots. Actually I found the less
| | (+) A valiant attempt at an Eastern Turandot that just fell short. | 30.10.2012
Karajan's digital recording of Puccini's `Chinese' opera in 1981 targets at an unique interpretation that is basically un-Italianate. With the exception of perhaps Placido Domingo, he chose a cast that are not generally known for verismo operas, and his choices are successful. The two lead women Turandot and Liu are both lyrical sopranos, some thing that is rare for the title role who are invariably sung by a dramatic soprano, not even a spinto. So it is not surprising for people to
| | Dramatic imbalance bordering on disastrous. | 20.10.2012
I don't care for this recording, and had it not been included in the Domingo boxset, would not have vbeen bothered with it. First of all, I like the three leads, especially Liu (Hendricks). Ricciarelli is one of my favourite sopranos, and her Turandot is atypical but acceptable. As for Domingo, though really no Corelli, sounds plangent enough, if sometimes a bit forced. However, I really don't like the sound balance, especially in ensembles involving the Unknown Prince (UP), where
| | 3,0 von 5 Sternen Problematisch, aber... | 29.08.2012
| | Mesmerizing. One for Karajan and one for Puccini! | 07.03.2012
Whatever weakness this recording has, it is to be relished, even if for the orchestral music alone! This score convincingly places Puccini among the top composers. Sure, the man has a natural sense of music and drama that secures him a place among the great opera composers even before he went for the more exotic. But the music of Turandot, as is conducted here by von Karajan, goes beyond the usual standard. Words fail to describe the experience adequately. The complexity, the interplay of

There is no doubt that the best Turandot of, at least, the last 40 years is Birgit Nilsson. However, her recording with Molinari-Pradelli is unbearable. Not because of her, don't get me wrong. But one thing that Franco Corelli was consistent was to wreck potential great recordings and with this Turandot, Corelli obtained one of his greatest achievement. I understand that there are many Corelli fans out there, but... Disclaimer: I don't know Nilsson's earlier recording with

| | A dark and beautiful, but not ideally powerful Turandot | 17.02.2008
Turandot is one of the most spectacular opera's written in the 20th century, and it is quite unbelievable that so few recordings of it are available, and even fewer modern ones. When it comes to digital recordings, this Karajan has no real contenders: the Maazel on Sony is a live recording marred by some insanely slow tempos and too much stage noise and is repeatedly interrupted by applause; the Abbado on RCA can nowadays only be found second-hand; and the Parry on Chandos, though in many

The beautiful TURANDOT is illuminated with golden brilliance in this recording of the master Von Karajan with a casting of his more dear singers with the orchestra that he loved: The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Controversial it continues being his selection, Katia Riciarelli, for the principal role, but curiously the most obvious reason has not treated: Turandot is a dazzling woman as to be charmed with to the hero Calaf. And besides beautiful voice the Riciarelli she was a very attractive,
