It's a brilliant film, but the lack of subtitles (which is Amazon's fault entirely) makes the film incredibly hard to watch for people who struggle to hear. It's not acceptable to upload films without subtitles.

Gabourey Sidibe is amazing, simply amazing in this movie. The innocence about her character, but also the rough exterior kept my focus for the entire movie. I have to admit at the end if that mother was sitting in front of me speaking as she did to the case worker (yes Mirah Carey) I felt a strong sense to punch the hell out of her and have the police waiting for her ass (sorry Mo’Nique).

Potentially triggering: this is powerful stuff. Portrait of abused girl. It's an incredible film with amazing performances all round but not for the faint-hearted. I forgot that Mariah Carey performed in this and she is excellent as Precious' social worker. Gabourey Sidibe as Precious and Mo'Nique as her abusive mother though...they steal the show.Harrowing portrayals but never fall into caricature.

Powerful and emotional film poor precious is tortured and spoke to like a piece ov crap from her own mother ... raped by her father and pregnant for the 2nd time at 16 year old !! Precious sees a brighter future ahead with the help ov the loverly miss rain but all ends terrible when she finds out she is HIV positive heartbreaking

Competently made, written and acted, but you'd better be in just the 'right mood' to see this film otherwise you'll be severely depressed afterwards. As noted, there's some excellent acting, particularly by the teacher and the social worker who try to assist as best they can. But damn if this film just drags you down, down, down. A faint glimmer of hope just before the end credits begin to roll; and I'm thankful for this as I felt absolutely knocked-out and run over twice

I really wasn't sure I wanted to see this movie and it was difficult to watch due to the horrific abuse, neglect, poverty and bleakness portrayed. The main character, Precious, (Gabourey Sidibe) tugged at my heart throughout this film - to watch her absolute nightmare of horrific ongoing physical and mental abuse unfold right before my very eyes.....yet she is humble, quietly dutiful and somehow even hopeful. I recommend watching this movie if only to get a glimpse into a world the majority

But it demonstrates the power of caring teachers to make up for, at least in part, inadequate and even detrimental parenting, to pull a child out of a bottomless pit, to help her turn her life around, and to not let her past define her and her own children's futures.

So this is what happens when a crew of reverse racists get together to make a "movie" about a pseudo troubled ghetto family who milks the system and pops babies. Glorifying violence against white men and featuring the most unlikable lead character to ever star in a movie. With hidden messages of race baiting, this is the movie that inspired Nicholas Cruz to go on that massacre in his high school (admitted by Cruz after he was caught - check out the documentary on him on YT). There isn't too much more than I like than making a happy accident. I went in search of and thought I'd found a movie my memory only hinted at. And that wasn't this. This was better. This was one of those things that half way down the road you realise you didn't turn off toward work but straight ahead you see the most beautiful scenery, and there is candy and happiness and sunshine and children playing and the everything is carefree and perfect. No, it isn't heaven, but wow

I loved this movie and cant believe I have never heard of it before !!!! I cant believe this movie came and went and nobody saw it. It has given me a new respect for Oprah Winfrey.. I didnt know much about her except for her tv show.. but this is the story of her upbringing and what she went through as a poor child in New Jersey. its a great movie with a lot of humour and some drama mixed in as well.
